Music & Lyrics: Paul Lincke, Heinrich Bolten Baeckers
When asked for a typical Berlin anthem, most people spontaneously mention this title. Its composer Paul Lincke composed countless marches in this style. This was partly due to the fact that he had wanted to join the army as a young man, but was rejected because he did not meet the physical requirements.
Lincke gained great success with his comic operas and revues far beyond Berlin. As a young man he worked at the world’s most famous cabaret Folies Bergeres, where he was a celebrated star.
He later used his Paris experiences for his work at the Apollo Theater in Berlin, where he developed his comic opera „Frau Luna”. The anthem „Berliner Luft” is a song from this opera.
